Innovative Middle Schoolers Master AI Technology

The students of Maria Ausiliatrice Middle School in Reggio Calabria, aged between 11 and 13, have skillfully navigated the complexities of artificial intelligence (AI), engaging in a unique educational journey. Embracing the future of technology, they have become proficient in using Gpt apps and conducting machine learning sessions to create stunning images using advanced AI software.

This informative and training journey took place through “Aula G” – a journalistic laboratory sponsored by the weekly diocesan newspaper Avvenire di Calabria. Already in January, these young minds had the opportunity to explore the first application named “Correttore di Bozze” (Proofreader). But their experience didn’t end there. Starting in February, they delved into machine learning to train six new AI applications aimed at assisting journalists in social media article sharing tasks.

The functionality of the applications is remarkably user-friendly, specifically designed to distribute journalistic content across different social networks. For instance, the students interacted with individual apps tailored for social platforms like Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly known as Twitter), LinkedIn, and Threads. Each app generates multiple draft suggestions for a particular network, making the content sharing process smoother and more efficient.

The highlight of this innovative project was the “Social mentor one” app – a culmination of the previous five, which provides a single post draft for each of the aforementioned social networks. Celebrated as the latest achievement, this particular app was the finale in the recent machine learning session on May 7th.

The palpable excitement these AI-driven projects ignited extended beyond the students to their parents, some of whom expressed interest in participating alongside their children. Recognizing the potential of such programs, the educational activities are slated to continue beyond the academic year, enriching the summer program until July 20th.

Archbishop Morrone and the school principal, Sister Maria Ausilia Chiellino, have both praised the project for its pastoral vision and preventive approach towards misusing AI. The dire warnings of nurturing critical intelligence and ethical considerations remain central to the mission.

Davide Imeneo, director of Avvenire di Calabria, emphasized the alignment of these activities with the Pope’s message for the World Day of Social Communications, marking a step towards a more humane communication aided by artificial intelligence. The youngsters are not only being educated but also encouraged to use AI constructively.

Through such initiatives, the diocese is actively fostering an exchange of knowledge between generations, aiming to prepare the young minds for a world increasingly shaped by AI.
