Volkswagen Introduces AI-Powered Chatbot in Car Models

Volkswagen has announced its plans to incorporate an AI-powered chatbot, ChatGPT, into several of its car models. The integration of ChatGPT into Volkswagen’s IDA voice assistant allows owners to have seamless access to an expanding AI database. The chatbot will enable drivers to perform various tasks, such as making calls, adjusting volume, activating navigation, and controlling air conditioning, using voice commands.

The implementation of the new chatbot is set to be available through an over-the-air update in the second quarter of the year. One of the main features of ChatGPT is its ability to read out researched information while driving, providing drivers with a broader range of information. The chatbot aims to answer a wide range of questions and engage in intuitive conversations with the drivers.

Importantly, ChatGPT does not require users to create a new account or install a separate app to access its features. The foundation of the system, Cerence Chat Pro, was developed by technology partner Cerence Inc. Volkswagen emphasizes that personal data is protected, as the chatbot does not have access to vehicle information.

To activate the assistant, drivers can simply say, “hello, IDA,” or press a button on the steering wheel. If the assistant is unable to answer a request, the query is forwarded anonymously to AI, and the Volkswagen voice responds appropriately. ChatGPT does not have access to any vehicle data, and all questions and answers are instantly deleted to ensure the highest level of data protection.

The AI-powered chatbot will be compatible with the latest generation of infotainment systems in Volkswagen models, including the ID.71, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, Tiguan, Passat, and the upcoming Golf. Volkswagen’s new Golf model, celebrating its 50th anniversary next year, features a heavily revised interior with improvements in functionality, ergonomics, and quality.
