Cambridge Researchers Advocate for Ethical Standards in AI that Simulates the Deceased

Those finding initial solace in deadbots may eventually feel overwhelmed by daily interactions that become an emotional burden. Moreover, they may be powerless to stop an AI simulation if their departed loved one had signed a long-term contract with a posthumous digital service.

Dr. Katarzyna Nowaczyk-Basinska, one of the study’s authors from the Leverhulme Centre, noted the ethical minefield in this AI sector. At the same time, an AI simulacrum could be a parting gift for loved ones unprepared to process their grief in this way. Platforms to recreate the deceased using AI are already available, such as ‘Project December’, which began using GPT models before developing its systems, and apps like ‘HereAfter’. Similar services are cropping up in China as well. The paper presents hypothetical scenarios, such as “Mannana”: an AI service that creates a grandfather simulacrum without the consent of the ‘data donor’ (the deceased). Another scenario involves a fictional company “Paren’t” that crafts a bot to help a young child with the grieving process, but the AI eventually begins to produce perplexing responses.

Researchers recommend age restrictions for Deadbots and call for “meaningful transparency” to ensure users are consistently aware they are interacting with AI. This could be akin to current warnings about content that might trigger seizures, for example.

The researchers urge design teams to prioritize cancellation protocols, allowing potential users to emotionally conclude their relationship with these digital ghosts. Nowaczyk-Basinska adds, “We need to start thinking now about how we mitigate the societal and psychological risks of digital afterlives, as the technology is already here.”
