Arab Parliament Stresses the Importance of AI for National Development

Adel bin Abdulrahman Al-Asoumi, President of the Arab Parliament, highlighted the necessity of Arab countries adopting artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Al-Asoumi articulated that AI integration is no longer a luxury but an essential step for Arab nations to keep pace with global advancements and harness the benefits AI offers across various aspects of daily life. He also cautioned of the potential risks and challenges posed by AI, advocating for careful consideration of these aspects.

His statements were made during the sixth conference of the Arab Parliament and the heads of Arab councils and parliaments. This conference, titled “An Arab Parliamentary Vision for the Safe Utilization of Artificial Intelligence,” was held at the General Secretariat of the Arab League. Moreover, the session recognized Sheikh Khalid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Deputy Prime Minister, awarding him the Development Pioneers Medal for his significant contributions to development on a national level, making him the first Arab to receive this honor.

Al-Asoumi expressed the Arab Parliament’s focus on AI as central to comprehensive renaissance and sustainable development strategies within the Arab societies. He noted the active role of the parliament in formulating a legislative framework to regulate AI usage, citing the two-year-old precedent of the first Arab model law in the AI field.

Continuing the efforts, the Arab Parliament prepared a document “An Arab Parliamentary Vision for the Safe Utilization of Artificial Intelligence”. Discussed and adopted by the preparatory committee of the conference, it contains recommendations for AI governance, to be submitted to Arab leaders at the upcoming summit scheduled in Bahrain. Al-Asoumi expressed hope that this parliamentary vision would be a pioneering step towards a unified Arab strategy in the AI domain.

The Arab Parliament’s emphasis on the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) for national development highlights a key trend among governments worldwide to integrate advanced technologies into their development strategies.
