Seoul Hosts Largest ICT Exhibition Showcasing AI-Driven Innovations

The ‘World IT Show 2024’ in Seoul is the stage for cutting-edge ICT

From the 17th for three days, Seoul becomes a hub for tech enthusiasts as the biggest domestic ICT expo, ‘World IT Show 2024’, takes over the convention center at COEX. Sponsored by the Ministry of Science and ICT, the latest and most innovative products and services will be on display from 446 companies and institutions from 10 countries, sprawling across 1188 booths.

This year, exhibitors emphasize the theme, “Innovating Everyday Life with AI”, showcasing a wide array of exhibits that brings the transformative power of AI into the daily routines of visitors. Tech giants like Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, SK Telecom, KT, Kia, LG CNS, and Kakao, alongside promising enterprises such as Julynet, LittleCat, Graphen Square, Ensurreality, and Skiya, who were recognized at CES 2024 with innovation awards, have set up intriguing pavilions.

Recognizing excellence in digital innovation

Amidst the showcase, awards are also being distributed, spotlighting excellence in digital innovation. For the ImpaCT-ech Grand Prize, Samsung Electronics was honored with the President’s Award for its pioneering development of the world-first 12nm 32Gb DDR5 DRAM. Minister of Science and ICT Awards went to six companies including Samsung Electronics, Aight Tech, KT, SK Telecom, MyBenefit, and Posicube for their significant contributions. FRT Robotics, amongst three other companies, stood out at the Minister of Science and ICT Awards for their wearable robot intended to assist muscle strength and prevent musculoskeletal disorders.

As part of the exhibition, Samsung Electronics invites visitors to experience the seamlessly integrated artificial intelligence platform ‘Galaxy AI’ within a city square concept. The LG Electronics booth introduces empathy intelligence through innovative products and offers a sneak peek into the future with its ‘LG Alpha S’ future mobility that adapts fragrances according to the passenger’s mood.

SK Telecom encapsulates its theme on the evolution of AI-based communication with a historical timeline of its 40-year journey in telecommunications, while KT proudly presents its ‘AICT Company, KT’ theme, demonstrating a vast array of AICT technologies that one can encounter in daily life from schools to workplaces.

Challenges and Controversies in AI-Driven Innovations

One acknowledged challenge of AI-driven innovation, particularly at large ICT exhibitions like the World IT Show 2024, is the ongoing concern about data privacy and security. As AI technologies become more integrated into everyday life, the amount of personal data being processed and stored increases, raising concerns over how this data is used and protected. Managing cybersecurity threats in an increasingly connected world is thus a critical issue that companies and consumers alike must address.

Additionally, there is the challenge of AI ethics and bias. The algorithms powering AI systems can perpetuate existing biases if they are not carefully designed and tested. This can lead to controversy when AI is applied in sensitive areas such as recruitment, legal sentencing, or financial services. Exhibitions showcasing AI advancements implicitly acknowledge the need for responsible AI development that takes into account fairness and transparency.

Advantages and Disadvantages of AI-Driven Innovations

Advantages:

Increased Efficiency: AI-driven technologies can dramatically speed up processes and increase productivity in a wide range of industries.
Enhanced Personalization: AI can tailor experiences to individual preferences, improving customer satisfaction.
Innovation in Healthcare: AI is revolutionizing healthcare with predictive analytics and personalized medicine.
Job Creation: New technologies lead to the creation of new roles and industries, despite the fear of job displacement.

Disadvantages:

Job Displacement: While AI may create new roles, it can also lead to the displacement of workers as automated systems perform tasks previously done by humans.
Dependence on Technology: An increased reliance on AI systems may erode human skills in certain areas.
Societal Impact: There may be uneven benefits of AI advancement, potentially widening the divide between those who have access to cutting-edge technology and those who do not.
