AMD Strikes Back with Big Price Cut on RX 7900 XT Graphics Card

AMD has made a bold move to counter Nvidia’s release of the RTX 4070 Super by slashing the price of its RX 7900 XT graphics card. The GPU, originally priced at $900, is now available for $750, with some models even priced as low as $710. While the RX 7900 XT was not the most popular option in AMD’s lineup, this price cut makes it a competitive alternative to the new Nvidia offering.

Over the course of the past year, the price of the RX 7900 XT has steadily decreased, but this recent price cut marks a significant drop from its original price. With a reduction of nearly $200, the RX 7900 XT is now positioned as a strong contender against the RTX 4070 Super. In fact, in testing, it outperformed Nvidia’s GPU at every resolution.

However, it’s important to note that the inclusion of DLSS 3 and ray tracing in the RTX 4070 Super brings a new dynamic to the comparison. When running Cyberpunk 2077 on ultra settings at 4K with these features enabled, the RTX 4070 Super produced 77.5 frames per second, while the RX 7900 XT averaged 18 fps. This highlights the impressive power of Nvidia’s DLSS 3 technology rather than a significant difference in the capabilities of the two GPUs.

Looking ahead, the launch of the RTX 4070 Ti Super may pose a tougher challenge for AMD. With similar performance to the non-Super RTX 4080, and priced at $800, the RTX 4070 Ti Super is expected to outperform the RX 7900 XT in all scenarios. This could place the RX 7900 XT in an awkward position on the market, where it is neither cheap enough to be a steal nor powerful enough to be a must-have.

That being said, if DLSS 3 is not a priority for you, the current deals on the RX 7900 XT are exceptionally appealing. By opting for AMD’s GPU, you can save $50 to $100 compared to the upcoming release of the RTX 4070 Ti Super. However, it is worth noting that this price cut may be a seasonal promotion rather than a permanent change, so it is advisable to make the purchase quickly before AMD alters its pricing strategy.
