Indian Army Utilizes Artificial Intelligence to Assess Parade Performance

The Indian Army is set to revolutionize the evaluation process of its marching contingent during the 76th Army Day parade on January 15. In a bold move to minimize human interference, the Army will introduce artificial intelligence (AI) technology to assess the drill performance of soldiers.

Traditionally, judges have been relied upon to gauge the precision and uniformity of the contingent’s movements. However, this year, the Army will integrate AI-based technology from Sahana Systems to provide a more accurate assessment. The technology utilizes AI-enabled cameras strategically placed around the parade ground to capture the movement of all marching contingents. Live feeds from these cameras will be processed through the AI software, which will measure the drill performance according to predefined parameters. This AI system aims to eliminate any potential for human error in the evaluation process.

Major General Salil Seth, GOC, Madhya Uttar Pradesh Sub Area, emphasized the significance of this new development. He expressed that incorporating AI into the assessment process will ensure a fair and unbiased evaluation and will help select the most disciplined contingent.

The Army has already tested the technology in three practice drills, the latest occurring on January 11. Six marching contingents, including men from various regiments, will participate in the Army Day celebration at the 11 GRRC Thakur Sheodatt Singh parade ground. Additionally, the parade will feature regimental brass bands, pipe bands, a fly-past of microlights and helicopters, para motors by the Army Adventure Node of Agra, and a combat free fall by para commandos.

The decision to hold the Army Day parade outside of Delhi for the second consecutive year aligns with the government’s directive to showcase major events in different parts of the country. This initiative aims to increase awareness among citizens and inspire more young individuals to join the armed forces.

The implementation of AI technology in the evaluation process marks a significant step forward for the Indian Army, highlighting its commitment to embracing innovation and ensuring fair assessments of its marching contingents.
