Breakthrough AI Challenge Produces Winners in Predicting Heart Failure Outcomes

After a nine-month-long challenge, the winners of a groundbreaking global competition focused on using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to predict heart failure-related health outcomes for veterans have been officially announced. The Veterans Cardiac Health and AI Model Predictions (V-CHAMPs) Challenge, organized by a collaboration of regulators and healthcare organizations in the UK and US, brought together 25 teams of developers from around the world to build innovative models.

By utilizing synthetic datasets derived from real US veteran health records, participants explored a range of potential outcomes related to heart failure. This included predicting cardiovascular outcomes, hospital readmission rates, and mortality rates over the two-phase challenge. The ultimate goal of the competition was to provide valuable insights into cardiovascular risks and specific health outcomes in veterans, while also advancing the understanding of synthetic data and AI/ML models in healthcare.

Out of the 25 competing teams, the following five emerged as the winners, ranked in order:

– VHeartAI
– ZS Associates ADS Team
– TeamDSS
– CognizantGoodHeartML
– Team D&D

Puja Myles, Director of the Clinical Practice Research Datalink at the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), expressed enthusiasm for the progress achieved through this competition. Myles emphasized that the challenge has not only shown how advancements in AI methodology can enhance healthcare, but also highlighted the potential of synthetic data for training and testing AI algorithms.

The MHRA, together with US partners, leveraged cutting-edge health data expertise from both sides of the Atlantic to drive forward the understanding and application of AI in future projects. The valuable knowledge gained through this competition is expected to have a significant impact on the development of AI-driven healthcare solutions.
