Intel Launches Powerful 14th-Gen CPU Family at CES 2024

Intel made a significant announcement at CES 2024 in Las Vegas by revealing its complete 14th-generation CPU family. The lineup includes the powerful “HX” series chips, such as the 24-core i9-14900HX, designed for gamers and speed enthusiasts who prioritize raw power.

The Core i9-14900HX, Intel’s most powerful new laptop chip, features eight P-cores and 16 E-cores with a 5.8GHz turbo frequency. Intel claims it outperforms AMD’s Ryzen 7945X3D in gaming performance by 17 percent and is also 51 percent faster for multitasking virtual production. The Core i7-14700HX, on the other hand, boasts 20 total cores, including 4 additional E-cores compared to the previous model. These 14th-gen HX chips come with support for Thunderbolt 5 and 4 connections, Wi-Fi 6E, and discrete hardware for the new Wi-Fi 7 standard.

In addition to the 14th-gen laptop chips, Intel also announced 18 new desktop chips. The highest-performing model, the $549 i9-14900, features 24 cores and a maximum clock speed of 5.8GHz. Although Intel’s benchmarks suggest that the Core i9-14900 is only marginally faster than its 13th-gen predecessor, the chip outperforms AMD’s Ryzen 9 7900 in both the CrossMark benchmark (15 percent faster) and Premiere Pro’s PugetBench (32 percent faster).

Intel also introduced the Core U Processor Series 1, which caters to slim and light notebooks. The flagship model, the Intel Core 7 150U, boasts a 10-core chip (2 P-cores and 8 E-cores) with a clock speed that reaches up to 5.4GHz. The mid-range Core 5 120U offers similar core counts but slightly slower clock speeds, while the Core 3 100U is a 6-core chip that hits 4.7GHz.

While Intel’s Core Ultra chips remain a popular choice for most notebook buyers due to their overall performance and compatibility with external GPUs, the 14th-gen HX chips cater to users who prioritize extreme gaming and media creation. With this latest CPU family, Intel aims to offer a range of options to meet diverse consumer needs in terms of power and efficiency.
