Wizards of the Coast Faces Backlash over AI-Generated Artwork

Wizards of the Coast, the publisher of Magic: The Gathering, is facing criticism and backlash from the Magic community and artists after it was revealed that promotional images for the upcoming Ravnica Remastered set featured AI-generated artwork. The images, depicting retro-themed cards in a library setting, contained mistakes and oddities that were consistent with AI-generated art.

Initially, Wizards of the Coast defended the artwork, stating that it was created by humans and not AI. However, the company quickly deleted its response and issued a new statement acknowledging that the artwork did contain AI components. The blame was partially placed on an external marketing team, and Wizards stated that they would update their processes to ensure they support human ingenuity in their creative work.

This incident comes after Wizards of the Coast implemented a ban on the use of AI generative tools in the creation of Magic: The Gathering products. The ban was a result of an earlier realization that artwork for the Dungeons & Dragons sourcebook Glory of the Giants had been enhanced with AI tools. The company expressed a commitment to transparency and supporting human-made art.

The backlash from this incident has already had consequences, with artist Dave Rapoza publicly severing ties with Wizards of the Coast. Rapoza, who has worked on art for Magic cards, including sets based on The Lord of the Rings and Baldur’s Gate 3, criticized the company for their initial defense of the AI-generated artwork and stated that he would no longer work for them.

This incident highlights the challenges that arise from the use of AI in creative processes and the need for companies to ensure transparency and adhere to their own policies. As AI tools become more commonplace, it is essential for companies like Wizards of the Coast to navigate this evolving space while honoring the talent and creativity of human artists.
