Upcoming Symposium on Robotics and AI to Envision the Future

Dimitrana’s Conference and Cultural Center is set to host an engaging symposium on Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) on Saturday, April 27th, at 5 PM. The event will showcase the future prospects, opportunities, and challenges within the field of robotics, as well as the utilization of AI systems in various sectors.

Distinguished speakers will include Diana Voutyrakou, a renowned Software Engineer in Robotic Systems who holds numerous awards from national and global robotics competitions, and Dionysis Theocharis, an experienced Physics teacher with advanced degrees in Mathematics education, who is also recognized for his contributions to the Greek Mathematical Society.

Voutyrakou, an Electrical and Computer Engineer with a Master’s degree in Computational Biomedicine, is currently working on her Ph.D. at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, researching gender stereotypes in robotics and AI. Her presentation will explore robotics’ future in various fields and discuss AI systems’ potential use in education and essential skill development for the 21st century.

Theocharis, on the other hand, is a member of Mensa with a background in financial and banking management, a content creator in educational resources, and a Ph.D. candidate focusing on the use of AI in the sciences. His talk will cover modern AI tools valuable for both educational purposes and the tourism industry.

This symposium promises to offer insightful perspectives on the dynamic intersection of robotics, AI, and their implications for our rapidly evolving technological landscape.

Key Challenges and Controversies in Robotics and AI:

One of the main challenges in the field of robotics and AI is the ethical implications of technology development. As robots and AI systems are increasingly integrated into our daily lives, questions arise about privacy, security, job displacement, and decision-making autonomy.

Another significant challenge is the technical limitation in AI’s ability to understand and interpret human emotions and social cues, which is crucial for their successful integration into social contexts. Furthermore, ensuring fairness and avoiding biases in AI decision-making is a critical area of concern, especially when these systems are used in recruitment, law enforcement, and credit scoring.

The controversial nature of autonomous weapons, also known as “killer robots,” is another point of debate. The possibility of machines being able to decide whom to target in a military context raises significant ethical concerns and the potential for unaccountable loss of life.

Controversies also exist around the development of strong AI, or general AI, which would have the ability to understand or learn any intellectual task that a human being can. This idea brings up the concern of AI surpassing human intelligence, known as the singularity, and what this would mean for human existence.

Advantages and Disadvantages:

Advantages include the potential for robotics and AI to contribute to significant improvements in productivity and efficiency in various sectors, from manufacturing to healthcare. AI can analyze large datasets more quickly than humans, leading to faster breakthroughs in fields such as drug development and genetic research.

Moreover, robots and AI systems have the advantage of working in hazardous environments, reducing the risk to human workers in industries like nuclear energy or deep-sea exploration. They can also contribute to the reduction of human error in critical applications, such as surgical robots in operating rooms.

However, disadvantages include the potential for job displacement as robots and AI may replace human labor in certain tasks, leading to unemployment and economic disruption. There are also concerns about the lack of emotional intelligence in robots, as well as the potential for creating dependency on technology, which may lead to a decline in human cognitive abilities over time.

The issue of data privacy is a disadvantage as well, especially regarding AI systems that require vast amounts of data to operate, potentially infringing on individual privacy rights.
