Tamil Nadu Agricultural University Launches AI-Based Crop-Specific Weather Forecast

The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) in Coimbatore, India, has introduced an innovative artificial intelligence (AI)-based crop-specific weather forecast service. As the first institution in the country to develop automated agro advisories with zero human intervention, TNAU aims to help farmers reduce the risk of crop failure.

The service is accessible through a mobile application, which farmers can download and register with their mobile phone number and location. By providing details such as the crop being cultivated and the sowing date, farmers receive customized advisories based on AI calculations. These advisories are derived from a comprehensive database that includes past and upcoming weather information from the region.

Previously, farmers would receive general weather-based advisories as SMS messages. However, this approach proved to be costly. In response, TNAU devised a web-cum-mobile app that significantly reduced expenses while ensuring the delivery of accurate and crop-specific information. The app’s database comprises advisories for various weather scenarios, 108 crops, and 6 growth stages, allowing farmers to access precise guidance for their specific situations.

TNAU plans to enhance the app further by incorporating AI capabilities to improve its functionality. The university aims to extend the service to approximately eight lakh farmers this year. With location, time, and crop-specific micro-level advisories, farmers will be better equipped to mitigate the risks associated with crop failure and harness the full potential of their crops. The app will offer crop management, plant protection-related advisories, and information on extreme weather events.

The project, which is under the supervision of Associate Professor Dheebakaran at the Agro Climate Research Centre, has taken several years to develop. TNAU’s commitment to utilizing AI in agriculture demonstrates their dedication to empowering farmers with cutting-edge technology and ensuring their success in the face of climatic challenges.
