OpenAI Announces Collective Alignment Team to Crowdsource Public Opinion on AI Models

OpenAI has unveiled plans to establish a team of researchers and engineers that will engage the public in shaping the behavior of its AI models. Known as the Collective Alignment team, its objective is to develop systems that incorporate public input to guide AI models, addressing challenges such as the digital divide, polarized groups, diversity representation, and concerns surrounding AI governance.

The team will work alongside external advisors and grant recipients to pilot the incorporation of grant prototypes into OpenAI’s models. The company is actively seeking research engineers with diverse technical backgrounds to join the team and contribute to this initiative.

This announcement follows OpenAI’s previous public program, launched in May last year, which granted €100,000 to ten experiments exploring “democratic inputs to AI.” The aim of the program, as stated by OpenAI, was to foster a democratic process for determining the rules AI systems should follow.

In a recent development, OpenAI has released the code created by participating teams in the grant program, as well as summaries of their work. During the course of the program, some participants expressed concerns about the use of AI in policy-making and advocated for transparency in its application within democratic processes. Following deliberation sessions, many teams reported an increased sense of optimism regarding the public’s ability to contribute to AI guidance.

OpenAI’s efforts to involve the public in decision-making processes surrounding AI promote greater transparency and inclusivity. By incorporating diverse perspectives, the Collective Alignment team aims to ensure that AI models align with societal values and minimize potential biases. This innovative approach allows OpenAI to move toward a more democratic and responsible AI governance model, collectively led by researchers, engineers, and the public.
