AI Plays a Minor Role in Square Enix’s Upcoming Shooter Foamstars

Square Enix’s highly anticipated team shooter, Foamstars, will incorporate a small amount of AI art, according to the developer. In an interview with VGC, Foamstars producer Kosuke Okatani revealed that while the team had experimented with AI program Midjourney, the majority of the game’s content has been meticulously crafted by hand.

Okatani clarified that the core elements of Foamstars, including gameplay mechanics and features that enhance the overall experience, have been entirely developed through manual processes. The use of AI in the game amounts to only a fraction, approximately “0.01 percent or even less,” as Square Enix wanted to explore the potential of AI technology in their upcoming release.

Square Enix confirmed that AI was applied in the creation of in-game album covers for the Foamstars soundtrack. The developer used AI tool Midjourney, employing simple prompts to generate abstract images that were eventually chosen as the final album covers. However, it is important to note that the rest of the game’s artwork and content was exclusively created by Square Enix’s development team.

This recent implementation of AI follows Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu’s declaration that the company is committed to utilizing AI in their projects. Kiryu noted that generative AI, like ChatGPT, has the capacity to reshape the creative process and potentially revolutionize programming methods.

Nevertheless, skepticism about AI’s impact on the industry remains. Recently, voice actor Ned Luke voiced concerns when a web3 company employed his voice without permission to create an unofficial AI chatbot, illustrating the ongoing controversies surrounding AI applications.

As Foamstars forges ahead, players can anticipate a predominantly handcrafted gaming experience with only minimal AI contributions. The game’s season pass details and release on PlayStation Plus have already been revealed, allowing fans to dive deeper into what Foamstars has to offer.
