A Dutch deep tech startup, QDI Systems, has secured a Series A funding of €5 million to advance its groundbreaking quantum dots technology for various applications in the medical sector. Led by NOM, the Investment and Development Agency for the Northern Netherlands, the funding round also included participation from previous investors Carduso Capital, RuG Ventures, and the well-known Nordic venture capital fund Maki.vc. Moreover, the funding encompassed an innovation loan of €1.97 million from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), providing crucial support to QDI Systems’ innovative science-based projects.
QDI Systems specializes in the development of imaging devices for medical applications, specifically leveraging nanomaterial quantum dots, which are tiny semiconductor nanoparticles capable of efficiently converting photons into electronic signals. With their ability to enhance image quality while reducing radiation doses, quantum dots have the potential to revolutionize medical imaging, including X-ray imaging and mammography screening.
“We are proud to pioneer this technology in medical imaging. Our mission is to provide high-quality images for radiologists, thus enabling more precise and early-stage diagnostics,” stated Artem Shulga, the CEO and founder of QDI Systems. Shulga, a physicist and PhD, founded QDI Systems as a spin-off of the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials at the University of Groningen in 2019.
In addition to X-ray applications, QDI Systems is actively exploring the use of shortwave infrared (SWIR) in its technology. The inclusion of SWIR presents exciting new opportunities for the company, including industrial applications like image sensors for sorting processes and consumer applications such as facial recognition for mobile phones. With the consumer market showing increasing adoption of SWIR technology, this development opens up a significant market opportunity for QDI Systems.
Collaborating with the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology CSEM, QDI Systems recently achieved a breakthrough by developing the first quantum dots-based CMOS imaging chip for X-rays. This innovation holds great potential across various industries, including healthcare and machine vision.
