While more complex tasks, like installing electrical wiring in a house, were projected to take longer, the survey also revealed that by 2116, there is a 50% likelihood that AI could excel in all occupations, including roles as diverse as waste collectors and surgeons.
Despite concerns about job displacement, the World Economic Forum predicts that AI will actually create 12 million more jobs than it replaces in the near future. Over half of the survey participants expressed optimism about AI’s impact on humanity, highlighting its potential for positive contributions. However, a significant minority did have reservations, particularly regarding the potential risks and negative consequences associated with AI.
The survey brought to light various fears among the respondents, ranging from concerns about the spread of fake news and the creation of deepfakes to worries about authoritarian control facilitated by AI. Opinions on the speed of AI development were divided, with roughly 35% of participants arguing for a slower or faster pace in its progress. Meanwhile, 27% believed that the current pace was appropriate, and a slight majority favored a quicker pace.
