Blockchain Games Experience High Rate of Discontinuation, but New Games on the Rise

A recent study conducted by the Big Blockchain Game List reveals that more than 30% of blockchain games that were announced in 2023 have been discontinued or canceled. This data is based on a comprehensive list of 911 games, with 334 currently live and 577 still in development as of January 2024.

Out of a total of 1,318 blockchain games listed since the initiative’s launch in 2021, 31% (equivalent to 407 games) have been classified as discontinued or abandoned. The main reasons cited for these discontinuations include funding challenges and market conditions, particularly during the crypto winter. Interestingly, many of these projects ceased operations without any formal announcements.

In the second half of 2023, there was a significant shift in the discontinued games landscape. Multichain games accounted for 17% of the 162 discontinued titles, reflecting the growing trend of games integrating with two or more blockchains. Among the discontinued games based on single blockchains, BNB and Polygon emerged as the leaders, representing 11% and 10% respectively. Ethereum, Sui, and Solana also made notable contributions, representing 6% each.

Notably, Polygon surpassed Ethereum in terms of the proportion of discontinued titles compared to the first half of 2023. While BNB remained the blockchain with the most discontinued games, Polygon experienced a surge, partly due to the increase in discontinued games from projects like Sui, surpassing Wemix in discontinuations.

Despite these challenges, the blockchain gaming industry continues to witness the emergence of new games. In the fourth quarter of 2023, the Big List added 65 new blockchain games to its catalog. Among these, 11% adopted the multichain approach, indicating a sustained trend of games integrating with multiple blockchains. In terms of games deploying on a single chain, notable growth was observed in Arbitrum (9%), Optimism, Immutable, and Ethereum (8% each), as well as StarkNet and Avalanche (6% each).

According to a survey conducted by the Blockchain Game Alliance, 19.8% of respondents expressed optimism about traditional game studios entering the web3 gaming domain in 2024.

Yat Siu, the executive chairman of Animoca Brands, believes that the current period is a “cleanup year” for the blockchain gaming industry. Despite the challenges faced in 2023, Siu remains optimistic about the future of blockchain games and envisions a robust year ahead in 2024.
