Exploring the Impact of AI on User Engagement

A recent study conducted by researchers at Boston University’s Questrom School of Business shows that the release of ChatGPT, a generative artificial intelligence chatbot, has had a significant impact on user engagement at Stack Overflow, the popular website for computer programmers. Over the course of four months, Stack Overflow experienced a 15% decline in traffic, with a loss of approximately 1 million daily visits. This decline is attributed to users relying on the chatbot for quick automated answers rather than seeking help from their peers.

This finding highlights a social effect of AI adoption – the shift from human interaction to reliance on automated systems. In contrast, Reddit, a social site known for its emphasis on human interaction, did not experience any significant changes in user engagement during the same period. According to Gordon Burtch, information systems professor at Boston University, this disparity underscores the value users place on human connection when seeking information and support.

These findings were shared during the inaugural episode of a webinar series titled “AI Horizons” offered by AI at Wharton. The series aims to share cutting-edge research and insights on various aspects of AI. The first episode, titled “AI and Wellbeing,” featured experts from leading academic institutions discussing the impact of AI on mental health, workforce dynamics, and innovation.

The panelists also explored the potential risks associated with the growing use of chatbots. Julian De Freitas, director of the Ethical Intelligence Lab at Harvard Business School, highlighted the increasing reliance on chatbots for interaction, especially among individuals experiencing loneliness. However, he cautioned that while chatbots can offer support, they may not always recognize crisis messages effectively, posing potential dangers for individuals in need of immediate help.

The webinar also delved into the socialization of AI chatbots, particularly in healthcare. Weiguang Wang, professor at the University of Rochester’s Simon Business School, discussed his experiments with a socialized fitness bot and emphasized the potential of combining predictive models with medical knowledge and social skills for targeted applications.

While the panelists expressed excitement about the limitless possibilities of AI, they acknowledged the need for addressing concerns such as bias, safety, privacy, and regulations. As AI continues to evolve, they emphasized the importance of developing appropriate safeguards and standards.
