Intel has remained relatively quiet about the progress of its Arc Battlemage graphics cards, following the recent troubled launch of Alchemist. However, during CES 2024, Tom Petersen, a representative from Intel, shared some insights regarding the current state of Battlemage.
While the first-generation Arc A-Series graphics cards have shown improvement, they still have a long way to go before they can compete with the top contenders in the market. Nevertheless, Intel is hopeful that the lessons learned from Alchemist will lead to a more successful launch of Battlemage.
During an interview with PCWorld, Petersen revealed that approximately 30% of Intel’s engineers are currently focusing on Battlemage, primarily on the software side. Meanwhile, the hardware team is already working on the next project, likely the Arc Celestial, which is expected to be released in the coming years.
Petersen further mentioned that the first silicon for Battlemage has already been developed and that there is more exciting news to come. However, he refrained from providing any specifics at the moment. It appears that the technical specifications for the Arc B-series GPUs have already been finalized, which suggests that they may not be as ambitious as previously anticipated.
As for the release date, Petersen expressed his hope that the Arc Battlemage graphics cards would hit the market before CES 2025. However, he acknowledged the need for caution and advised not to rely solely on his words.
In the absence of new graphics card announcements, Intel has made some other interesting revelations at CES 2024. The company’s CEO, Pat Gelsinger, delivered a keynote speech emphasizing the significance of AI PCs, and attendees had the opportunity to experience the MSI Claw, the first Intel Arc and Core Ultra handheld device, firsthand.
While Intel may be keeping its cards close to its chest regarding Battlemage, the updates from Petersen have certainly piqued the interest of enthusiasts eagerly awaiting Intel’s next move in the competitive graphics card market.
