Taiwan Aims to Lead the Global Quantum Revolution

Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) has set an ambitious goal to become a global leader in quantum computing by domestically producing a quantum computer by 2027. This significant step forward in computational power could revolutionize various industries and drive the country’s technological advancements.

Collaborating with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Academia Sinica, the NSTC has initiated a five-year, NT$8 billion (US$258.86 million) quantum technology initiative. This initiative aims to support research and development in the field and streamline the quantum computer component supply chain.

Highlighting the potential of quantum computing, NSTC’s Department of Natural Sciences and Sustainable Development Head, Luo Meng-fan, referenced a Google study that demonstrated the remarkable speed and computational efficiency of quantum computers. With Taiwan’s push to develop its own quantum computer, the country seeks to leverage this power to address complex problems and enhance digital security through countermeasures like quantum cryptography.

While acknowledging the existing challenges, including high error rates, Luo projected that six more years of research and development are necessary for quantum computing to mature and have a global impact. By investing in academia and industry collaborations, Taiwan aims to create a conducive environment for advancing quantum technologies and fostering innovation.

In pursuit of its objective, Taiwan is also exploring partnerships with leading international players in the quantum computing field. The country is engaging with Finnish quantum computing hardware company IQM for potential testing platforms and leveraging quantum cloud computation services offered by IBM and Amazon.

By aiming to become a frontrunner in quantum computing, Taiwan is positioning itself at the forefront of the global quantum revolution. If successful, the domestic production of a quantum computer by 2027 could propel the country’s technological capabilities and pave the way for groundbreaking advancements across various sectors.
