Walmart and Sam’s Club Utilize AI to Enhance Shopping Experiences

In an effort to improve efficiency and enhance the customer experience, Walmart and Sam’s Club are implementing generative artificial intelligence (AI) across various aspects of their operations. By integrating AI technology, the retail giants aim to streamline employees’ processes and enhance inventory management.

Cheryl Ainoa, executive vice president and chief technology officer for Sam’s Club, highlighted the extensive application of AI within the companies. She stated, “AI probably infiltrates almost every area across our business from how we do the work we do to how we support the customers and members we have to the actual member experience itself.”

One example of AI utilization is the implementation of automated floor scrubbers. These machines utilize computer vision to navigate stores and map out their layouts. In addition to improving cleaning efficiency, the captured data is also used for inventory management. Ainoa explained, “We started using it to actually do inventory and be able to track for us – where do we have gaps in our inventory, where do we need to fill items in the store, where is there work that needs to be done.”

Furthermore, AI technology is being utilized to generate task lists for associates and managers. This ensures that employees focus on the most critical tasks that require immediate attention. Ainoa elaborated, “Here’s the top three things that need to be addressed immediately… here’s the places where you’ve got inventory out, here’s where you’ve got something that’s mismarked.”

Customers at Sam’s Club are also benefiting from AI integration, particularly through the scan-and-go feature. By leveraging previous purchase history, AI can provide personalized recommendations and reminders to shoppers as they navigate the store. For example, if a customer purchases 18-month diapers, they may receive a prompt suggesting they consider purchasing diaper rash medicine as well.

Generative AI is also aiding users in finding specific items. Ainoa explained that the technology takes into account different considerations based on a shopper’s circumstances. Whether it is for personal use, work, or for a pre-teen, the AI search functionality provides tailored recommendations and information.

Overall, Walmart and Sam’s Club’s implementation of AI demonstrates their commitment to enhancing customer experiences and optimizing internal processes. By utilizing AI technology, these retail giants are poised to cement their positions at the forefront of innovative retail practices.
