Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is considering the implementation of a WhatsApp chatbot system to address passenger queries and grievances regarding reservations. This initiative aims to revamp the existing Open Passenger Reservation system and potentially replace the current AI-Chatbot Vaani.

According to a source within KSRTC, they are currently in the process of finalizing the tender for the Online Passenger Reservation System, which is set to expire in April. As part of this revamp, they are exploring the integration of a WhatsApp chatbot. This modernization effort aims to replace the current SMS-based information system with a more efficient and user-friendly platform.

KSRTC’s existing AI chatbot, Vaani, was introduced in 2019 to act as a virtual personal assistant for passengers making ticket reservations. However, the potential introduction of the new WhatsApp chatbot signifies KSRTC’s willingness to further improve and streamline their passenger services.

This move aligns with the digitalization trend observed in the transportation sector. In 2022, the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation introduced a WhatsApp chatbot that enables passengers to book QR tickets, access train departure information, calculate fares between stations, recharge smart cards, and make hassle-free payments using UPI.
