Artificial Intelligence: The Short-Term Threat to the Global Economy

New data from the World Economic Forum (WEF) warns that misinformation and disinformation driven by artificial intelligence (AI) are the biggest short-term risks facing the global economy. The report, which surveyed over 1,400 global risk experts, policy-makers, and industry leaders, highlights concerns over the cost-of-living crisis and the intertwined risks of AI-driven misinformation and disinformation. The spread of false information can lead to increased societal polarization, particularly during national elections where bad actors may create false information or ‘deepfake’ videos.

Carolina Klint, Chief Commercial Officer for Europe at Marsh McLennan, explains that AI breakthroughs will disrupt the risk outlook for organizations. They will struggle to react to threats arising from misinformation, disintermediation, and strategic miscalculation. In addition, companies are facing challenges posed by geopolitical complexities, climate change, and a growing number of cyber threats. Building resilience at all levels, from organizations to countries and international cooperation between the public and private sectors, is crucial to navigate this rapidly evolving risk landscape.

While AI-driven misinformation is a pressing issue in the short term, the report also highlights long-term concerns related to extreme weather and critical changes to Earth’s systems. The growing risks of biodiversity loss and shortages of natural resources dominate the long-term threat table. Alongside these environmental concerns, cyber insecurity and interstate armed conflict are identified as significant short-term risks.

It is clear that addressing the challenges of AI-driven misinformation, disinformation, and environmental risks requires a proactive and collaborative approach. The WEF report emphasizes the importance of cooperation between public and private sectors to navigate these complex and evolving risks.
