Valve Requires Developers to Disclose Usage of AI on Steam

Valve, the indie platform holder, has announced a new policy for Steam releases involving the use of AI technology. Developers are now required to disclose on their Steam pages how they are utilizing AI tools, including the measures they have put in place to prevent the generation of illegal or copyright-infringing content. Additionally, Valve is introducing a player reporting system to address any breaches of these policies, allowing users to report potentially illegal content. However, the company stated that live-generated adult-only sexual content created with AI is still prohibited from being released on Steam.

Valve has previously expressed their interest in enabling innovation in AI-based game development. However, they faced challenges in determining whether developers have the necessary rights to use images, text, and music generated by AI tools trained on existing content. In response to these concerns, Valve has added an “AI disclosure section” to the content survey that developers must fill out during the game submission process. This section requires developers to provide a description of how they are utilizing AI in their game’s development and execution.

Valve has categorized the usage of AI in games into two main categories: pre-generated and live-generated content. Pre-generated content refers to any content created during the development phase using AI tools, while live-generated content is generated in real-time while the game is running. In addition to the existing rules for pre-generated AI content, developers using live-generated AI content must also specify the guardrails they have implemented to prevent the creation of illegal content.

Valve’s acceptance of a game on Steam will be accompanied by the inclusion of this disclosure information on the Steam store page. Furthermore, the company will be implementing a player reporting system through the in-game Steam overlay, allowing users to easily report potentially illegal or infringing content they encounter.

Valve’s policy adjustments aim to strike a balance between encouraging innovation in AI-based game development and ensuring compliance with copyright laws and policies. The company acknowledges the evolving nature of AI technology and its legal implications, and commits to revisiting these policies as necessary in the future.
