Consumers Embrace Autonomous Driving, Expressing Strong Desire for Advanced Features

Consumers are increasingly drawn to autonomous driving and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), according to a recent survey conducted by Ghost Autonomy. The survey, which gathered insights from over 1,200 participants across diverse demographics, reveals that three in four consumers have a strong preference for fully autonomous driving over robotaxis. Additionally, 52% of respondents who have firsthand experience with self-driving vehicles would be willing to expedite their next car purchase if full autonomy were available.

The research also highlights that Tesla owners are leading the way in their enthusiasm for autonomous technology. This group exhibited the highest rate of exposure to self-driving features and expressed a desire for full autonomy in their next vehicle. It is evident that drivers who have the opportunity to experience self-driving are positively inclined towards it.

Consumers recognize the potential benefits of autonomous driving, with a majority expressing interest in leveraging the technology to enhance their lifestyles. Over 65% of respondents stated that they would want autonomous driving in their cars within the next decade if proven to be safe. The desire for fully autonomous driving is particularly pronounced among younger drivers, with 73% of those aged 21-29 and 69% of those aged 30-39 expressing a strong desire for it within the next five years.

Furthermore, the survey found that safety features are a top priority for car buyers. Consumers prioritize safety systems such as blind spot monitoring, lane keeping assist, emergency swerve assist, and driver monitoring over other features like keyless entry or premium infotainment systems. In fact, 61% of respondents would expedite their next car purchase if advanced safety systems capable of reducing accidents by 90% or more were available.

The convenience factor also plays a significant role in consumers’ interest in autonomous driving. More than half of commuters surveyed stated that they would accelerate their next car purchase if fully autonomous driving capabilities were available today.

Overall, the survey results indicate a growing demand for autonomous driving features among consumers. As the automotive industry responds to this demand, it is crucial to focus on educating and exposing consumers to the benefits and safety standards associated with autonomy.
