New Trends Emerge at the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition

The BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition is currently underway, showcasing the scientific endeavors of young researchers. This year, the event highlights several emerging trends, including artificial intelligence, diversity and inclusion, and mental health. These trends are evident in the more than 2,000 project entries submitted for the exhibition.

In addition to the recurring categories of social and behavioral sciences, technology, and biological and ecological sciences, a new category has been introduced: health and wellbeing. This addition reflects the growing importance of addressing issues related to personal wellness.

Shay Walsh, the managing director of BT Ireland and the exhibition organizer, describes this year as momentous. He emphasizes the exhibition’s role in inspiring young people to use STEM disciplines to understand and improve the world. Reflecting on the exhibition’s 60th anniversary, Dr. Tony Scott, one of its co-founders, expresses his awe at its longevity and impact on the country’s development.

The exhibition is also a platform for students to showcase their incredible talent and the increasingly high standards of their work. John Monahan, the first-ever winner of the exhibition, highlights the exceptional caliber of Irish students’ scientific achievements. His own winning project on human digestion was conducted in a homemade shed-turned-lab.

President Michael D Higgins commends the young scientists, emphasizing the importance of their work in addressing the challenges of our time. The exhibition offers students a fantastic opportunity to develop their ideas and contribute to improving the world. With more than 200 prizes awarded and a prize fund of €50,000, the exhibition provides recognition and support for these young talents.

The BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition is open to the public from Thursday to Saturday. Visitors are encouraged to book in advance to secure their spot. This annual event not only showcases the innovation and dedication of young scientists but also serves as a testament to the bright future of STEM education and research.
