Concerns about AI Hindering Adoption by Large Businesses

Large businesses around the world are facing hurdles when it comes to adopting artificial intelligence (AI) within their organizations. Skills shortages and ethical concerns have emerged as the top reasons, according to a recent study by IBM. The study, based on a global survey of over 8,500 information technology professionals, highlighted that businesses are grappling with the ethical quandaries presented by generative AI in particular.

One of the key concerns raised by respondents was data privacy, with 57% citing it as their top concern when using tools like ChatGPT. Additionally, 43% expressed concerns about trust and transparency. However, despite these apprehensions, many businesses are already working with AI and intend to increase their investment in the technology. In fact, more than two-fifths of the surveyed businesses stated that they have already integrated AI processes into their operations.

While businesses in India, China, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates are leading the charge, there is still a significant portion (40%) of businesses globally that are yet to fully roll out AI but are actively experimenting with or exploring the technology.

The study also revealed that a lack of skills and expertise is a major barrier to AI adoption for 33% of businesses. Another 25% expressed ethical concerns, and 23% cited difficulties in integrating and scaling AI projects. IBM senior vice-president Rob Thomas emphasized the importance of overcoming these barriers, stating that 2024 will be the year when companies must address the skills gap and data complexity.

Parallel research suggests that Irish businesses have been slower than their international counterparts in adopting AI due to concerns about data security and potential cyber attacks. A PwC survey found that more than half of Irish and international business leaders believe generative AI could lead to “catastrophic cyber attacks” in the next year. This caution is evident in the fact that less than half of Irish respondents understand the cyber risks associated with emerging technologies. Specifically, only 45% of Irish businesses have included generative AI in their formal risk management plans, compared to 58% globally.

As businesses continue to navigate the challenges of AI adoption, it becomes crucial to address concerns and bridge the skills gap to fully harness the potential of this transformative technology.
