Fox Corp Introduces Verify Platform to Safeguard Media Content

Fox Corp has launched its groundbreaking blockchain platform, Verify, aimed at protecting media organizations’ content from unauthorized use. The Verify tool allows media companies to register their content and negotiate licensing deals with AI firms, while also ensuring the authenticity of their content. This move comes as AI firms seek licensing agreements to access media content for language model training purposes.

The Verify Protocol was developed through a collaboration between the Fox Corp technology team and Polygon Labs, a leading media software services firm. A beta version of the platform was initially launched internally at Fox Corp in August, with Fox News’ first Republican primary debate being the first content uploaded to the protocol. Since then, over 80,000 pieces of content from Fox Corp networks have been assigned to the system.

Fox Corp is aiming for a second release of the Verify Protocol in early 2024, transitioning from the Polygon public blockchain to an application-specific blockchain to reduce costs. The goal is to make the protocol accessible for the authentication of content from online publishers worldwide.

This approach distinguishes Fox Corp from other media organizations that have recently entered licensing deals without incorporating a technological element. For instance, Axel Springer, the parent company of Politico and Business Insider, recently partnered with OpenAI for content licensing. However, tensions between media and AI are already emerging, as the New York Times has filed lawsuits against OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement involving the publication’s content.

By introducing Verify, Fox Corp aims to offer a comprehensive solution to protect its own content and encourage other media organizations to safeguard their intellectual property from unauthorized use. The platform’s ability to verify content authenticity and facilitate negotiations between media companies and AI firms positions it as an innovative approach to adapting to the changing landscape of the media industry.
