Micron Technology and Indian Government Collaborate to Boost Semiconductor Manufacturing Ecosystem

The President and CEO of Micron Technology, Sanjay Mehrotra, recently met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the company’s efforts to enhance the semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in India. The meeting took place in Gandhinagar, where they discussed the progress of Micron’s project in Sanand and its focus on increasing the workforce for semiconductor manufacturing in the country.

During the meeting, Mehrotra expressed his appreciation for the support of Prime Minister Modi and the government at both the state and central levels. He emphasized that India has a great opportunity to become a major global hub in semiconductor manufacturing, and Micron is taking the pioneering step of starting a manufacturing plant in the country. He further expressed hope that the ecosystem will follow successfully in this endeavor.

Last year, Micron Technology announced its plans to invest up to USD 825 million in building a new semiconductor assembly and test facility in India. The company selected Gujarat’s SANAND Industrial Park due to its favorable manufacturing infrastructure, business environment, and talent pipeline. This investment is expected to boost India’s position in the semiconductor industry over the next decade.

The central government of India has been actively collaborating with global and domestic players to strengthen the semiconductor manufacturing sector. The meeting between Micron Technology and Prime Minister Modi last year took place during the Semicon India event, which aimed to make India a global hub for semiconductor design, manufacturing, and technology development.

India’s Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, initiated by Narendra Modi in 2003, has played a significant role in putting the state on the world map of trade and industry. The upcoming tenth edition of the Summit, scheduled for January 2024, is expected to further stimulate collaboration and investment in various sectors, including semiconductor manufacturing.

As the collaboration between Micron Technology and the Indian government continues, the country’s semiconductor industry is likely to witness significant growth, leading to job creation and economic development. The focus on enhancing the manufacturing ecosystem aligns with India’s vision to become a global leader in technology and innovation.
