Duolingo has recently adopted the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in order to streamline their language-learning app and create more content. As a result, the company has reduced their contractor workforce by approximately 10%, according to a spokesperson.
The implementation of generative AI has allowed Duolingo to expedite the creation of app scripts and more efficiently develop their course content. Additionally, AI has been utilized to generate voices within the app, creating a more immersive language-learning experience. In fact, Duolingo Max, their newly introduced premium tier, even offers AI-generated feedback and conversations in various languages.
However, it should be noted that the reduction in contractor positions does not directly equate to a complete replacement by AI technology. The spokesperson highlighted that many of Duolingo’s full-time employees and contractors continue to incorporate AI into their work processes. At the end of 2022, the company had a total of 600 full-time workers, indicating that no full-time employees were affected by the recent cutbacks.
Despite the job cuts, Duolingo’s stock has experienced a positive response, with a 3.4% increase to $211.09 in New York trading. This rise comes after a substantial growth in stock value throughout 2023.
