Nvidia RTX 4080 Super: A Mid-Cycle Refresher with Enhanced Value

Nvidia is set to launch the RTX 4080 Super as a mid-cycle refresh to their AD103-based 80-class graphics card. This new offering aims to provide high-framerate 4K gaming at a more affordable price of just $999. The 4080 Super will directly compete against the AMD RX 7900 XTX, leveraging Nvidia’s advantages to potentially surpass it in performance. As a result, the original 4080 model is being discontinued due to its poor value in comparison to the new and improved variant.

The RTX 4080 Super features a slight specifications upgrade, fully utilizing the AD103 chip with 10,240 CUDA cores and 80 RT cores. Compared to its predecessor, the 4080, the improvements are not significant, as the 80-class card already had 9,728 CUDA cores and 76 RT cores. The VRAM buffer remains the same at 16 GB of 256-bit GDDR6X, providing ample resources for both 1440p and 4K gaming. However, Nvidia has upgraded the video memory to the fastest-ever, resulting in slightly enhanced performance.

In terms of pricing, the RTX 4080 Super stands out by bucking the trend of increasing graphics card prices. While the original 4080 was priced at $1,199, the new model comes in at a more accessible $999, aligning it with the AMD RX 7900 XTX in price. With slightly improved specifications, the 4080 Super poses strong competition to its rival, potentially elevating it to the top recommendation in this price range.

In terms of performance, the supercharged variant offers only about a 5% improvement over the original 4080. This is due to the AD103 GPU already pushing its limits. However, considering its lower price point, the 4080 Super offers better value for money. Additionally, when compared to previous-generation cards, it delivers a significant performance uplift of 40% over the 3080 Ti, making it a worthwhile upgrade.

The Nvidia RTX 4080 Super is set to be available for purchase starting January 31. Reviews of the GPU will be released a day prior to its availability. Customers can purchase the graphics card from leading retail stores such as Newegg, Amazon, Micro Center, and Best Buy. Overall, the 4080 Super reinvigorates the 80-class lineup with competitive pricing and impressive performance, positioning it as a premium product in the market.
