Apple Set to Unveil Generative AI Features in iOS 18, Catching Up to Competitors

Apple is preparing to launch its own generative AI offerings as part of the upcoming iOS 18 release, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The iPhone maker has been testing its large language model (LLM), named Ajax, since early 2023 and plans to announce its AI offerings at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.

While companies like Microsoft, Google, and Samsung have already integrated AI tools into their hardware and software, Apple has been trailing behind. However, with the introduction of AI features to its core apps and productivity software, such as auto-summarizing and auto-complete in Pages and Keynote, Apple aims to catch up to its competitors.

Apple also plans to leverage AI for enhanced recommendations and playlists in Apple Music. The company is giving Siri, its on-device assistant, an AI overhaul to compete with advanced chatbots like ChatGPT and Copilot. However, Gurman predicts that Apple will only fully scale its generative AI vision by next year.

Additionally, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed that the upcoming iPhone 16 models will feature an upgraded microphone designed to greatly improve the Siri experience and voice input. Apple’s Siri team has been working on LLMs and other AI features since Q3 2023, further highlighting the company’s commitment to AI development.

In recent months, Apple has been negotiating deals with publishers to train its generative AI systems using news content. The company has pitched multiyear licensing deals worth at least $50 million to access news article archives from publishers such as Condé Nast, the New Yorker, and NBC News.

With the release of iOS 18 and the integration of generative AI features, Apple aims to bridge the gap with its competitors in the AI race. The WWDC keynote in June will likely provide more insights into Apple’s AI offerings and the advancements it plans to make in the coming years.
