Nvidia, a prominent U.S. chipmaker, has announced plans to commence mass production of its artificial intelligence (AI) chip for the Chinese market in the second quarter of 2024. This move comes in response to U.S. export rules and restrictions that were introduced in October. The H20 chip, considered the most powerful among the three China-focused chips developed by Nvidia, was originally slated for release in November of last year but encountered delays due to integration issues with server manufacturers.
Although initial production volumes will be limited, Nvidia intends to prioritize orders from major customers. The chipmaker has not yet disclosed any information regarding the sale of these new chips. Furthermore, the company faces reluctance from Chinese companies to purchase the downgraded H20 chip, as they are exploring local alternatives to minimize the risk of potential future US restrictions. Last year, Baidu, the leading Chinese search engine, shifted its allegiance to Huawei Technologies’ AI chips instead of relying solely on Nvidia.
Apart from the H20 chip, Nvidia has plans to develop two other chips, the L20 and L2, which also comply with the new export restrictions. In late December, Nvidia introduced a modified version of an advanced gaming chip that aligns with the updated rules. The chipmaker views these chips as vital for maintaining its market share in China after the U.S. tightened export restrictions, preventing the shipment of products such as the advanced A800 and H800 AI chips.
While the H20, L20, and L2 chips retain many of Nvidia’s cutting-edge AI features, they have been modified to adhere to the reduced computing power mandated by the new regulations. Nvidia aims to meet the demands of its Chinese customers while complying with export restrictions through the production and sale of these specialized chips.
