China has made a significant stride in the quantum computing field with the launch of the third-generation superconducting quantum computer, “Origin Wukong.” According to reports from Chinese media outlet The Global Times, the powerful “Origin Wukong” was unveiled on January 6 at Origin Quantum Computing Technology in Hefei.
What sets the “Origin Wukong” apart is its impressive 72-qubit superconducting quantum chip, known as the “Wukong chip.” This development marks a major breakthrough in China’s quantum computing journey, making it the most advanced programmable and deliverable superconducting quantum computer in the country. The Anhui Quantum Computing Engineering Research Center and the Anhui Provincial Key Laboratory of Quantum Computing Chips have jointly issued a statement confirming this achievement.
Similar to the approaches employed by other quantum computer makers like IBM and Google, the “Origin Wukong” relies on superconducting technology. This quantum computer is equipped with Origin Quantum’s state-of-the-art third-generation quantum computing measurement and control system. The implementation of this system has enabled China to conduct its first automated batch testing of quantum chips, significantly enhancing the efficiency of quantum computing operations.
The “Wukong chip” boasts a total of 198 qubits, consisting of 72 working qubits and 126 coupler qubits. Coupler qubits play a vital role in facilitating interactions between the other qubits, which are commonly referred to as working qubits.
Origin Quantum has long been at the forefront of China’s quantum computing advancements. Since its establishment in 2017, the company has delivered both first- and second-generation superconducting quantum computers to the Chinese market. Origin Quantum has achieved numerous milestones, including establishing China’s initial quantum chip production line, developing the country’s first quantum computer operating system, and designing the first quantum computing measurement and control system. Furthermore, Origin Quantum holds the leading position for quantum computing patents in China and ranks sixth globally.
It is worth noting that The Global Times, a tabloid newspaper affiliated with the People’s Daily, the flagship newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party, and Pakistan Today, an English-language daily newspaper from Pakistan, have reported on this groundbreaking development.
