Nvidia Introduces the RTX 5880 Ada: Designed for Chinese Market

Nvidia has recently launched the RTX 5880 Ada graphics card, specifically tailored for the Chinese market. It conforms to the latest U.S. export rules, a significant development for the company. The RTX 5880 Ada is positioned between the RTX 6000 Ada and RTX 5000 Ada, offering a compelling option for Chinese consumers.

To comply with U.S. export restrictions, Nvidia has adjusted the specifications of the RTX 5880 Ada. The graphics card features 14,080 CUDA cores, which is approximately 23% fewer than the RTX 6000 Ada but still 10% more than the RTX 5000 Ada. This leads to a slight performance gap between the RTX 5880 Ada and the RTX 5000 Ada, while the difference with the RTX 6000 Ada is more noticeable.

Although Nvidia hasn’t disclosed the exact clock speeds of the RTX 5880 Ada, they have provided performance metrics that allow for a reasonable estimation. The graphics card offers 69.3 TFLOPS of single-precision performance, surpassing the RTX 5000 Ada by 6% but falling short of the RTX 6000 Ada by 24%. Similar margins apply to the RT core and Tensor core performance.

Despite the reduction in CUDA cores, the RTX 5880 Ada maintains the same memory subsystem as the RTX 6000 Ada. It comes with 48GB of 18 Gbps GDDR6 ECC memory and a 384-bit memory interface, delivering a memory bandwidth of 960 GB/s.

In terms of power consumption, the RTX 5880 Ada consumes less power than the RTX 6000 Ada due to the reduced CUDA cores. However, it has a slightly higher total board power (TBP) compared to the RTX 5000 Ada. The power connector layout remains the same, with a single 16-pin (12VHPWR) power connector located at the rear of the graphics card.

While the pricing for the RTX 5880 Ada has not been revealed, it is expected to fall between the price points of the RTX 6000 Ada ($9,999) and the RTX 5000 Ada ($6,999). However, Nvidia’s recent pricing strategy with the GeForce RTX 4090D raises the possibility that the RTX 5880 Ada may be priced closer to the higher-end model.

With the launch of the RTX 5880 Ada, Nvidia aims to address the specific needs of the Chinese market while ensuring compliance with export regulations. This release demonstrates Nvidia’s commitment to providing tailored solutions for different regions.
