AI’s Potential in Marine Fisheries Explored at National Workshop

In a national workshop jointly organized by NITI Aayog, ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), and the Kerala Fisheries Department, experts discussed how artificial intelligence (AI) could help tackle challenges in the marine fisheries sector. NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Suman Bery emphasized the vital role of technology as a growth driver and highlighted the potential of frontier technologies like AI in addressing these challenges.

One of the key areas of focus during the workshop was understanding the dynamics of demand in order to prioritize production strategies. Bery emphasized the need for innovative approaches to enhance productivity, particularly in light of rising demand for fish and its impact on the economy. He stressed the importance of adopting strategies to meet this growing demand.

The workshop also addressed concerns about the disparity in fish production among coastal states. NITI Aayog member Ramesh Chand highlighted the significant difference in fish production between Andhra Pradesh and other maritime states. He called for greater attention to address these imbalances and suggested measures to boost seafood exports, such as enhancing value addition and introducing cutting-edge processing innovations.

J.K. Jena, Deputy Director General of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), urged participants to explore the untapped potential of oceanic and deep-sea resources. He highlighted the estimated harvestable potential of 2.1 million metric tonnes in these areas, offering a new frontier for commercial fisheries.

The workshop served as a platform for discussing relevant issues in the marine fisheries sector, developing tailored strategies, and fostering partnerships between coastal states. The potential application of AI and other frontier technologies in addressing these challenges was a key point of discussion. By leveraging technology and exploring untapped resources, the marine fisheries sector in India has the opportunity to improve productivity and contribute to economic growth.
