Significant Rise in Deepfake Videos Prompts Regulatory Action

The advancement of generative AI has led to a surge in the manipulation of videos featuring celebrity likenesses, with a reported near quadrupling of such instances in the past year alone. The Broadcasting Communication Review Committee (BCRC) has taken decisive action against the distribution of these ‘sexually fabricated videos’, calling for the correction of an overwhelming 4,691 cases.

Marking the seriousness of the situation, the BCRC noted this substantial increase in manipulated content, particularly those that superimpose K-Pop idols and actors’ faces onto adult content, disseminated largely through foreign adult websites. Intensive monitoring initiated from January to April has led the commission to demand rectifications in these cases, which represent a 3,745 case increment from the same period the previous year.

The committee expressed grave concerns, acknowledging that it wasn’t just celebrities that were being targeted, but also minors and the general public.
