Japanese Survey Highlights the Risks and Rewards of AI Integration in Business

The latest research findings by AvePoint Japan, published on April 23rd, have shown a clear disparity between organizations’ information management (IM) strategies and the practical deployment of artificial intelligence (AI). The study, encompassing over 750 IT department leaders across 16 countries in 10 industries, underscored the reality that organizations with advanced IM strategies witness up to 1.5 times more effective AI implementation outcomes. However, more than half of the organizations experienced unintended data leaks during their actual AI operations, highlighting a stark gap between strategy and reality.

The survey indicated that out of the companies considering AI adoption, less than half were confident in their ability to implement it safely and had established AI usage guidelines. Despite a rapid increase in data volume handled by organizations, only 29% had integrated digital transformation (DX) or automation into their IM strategies.

While 88% of organizations had an IM strategy in place, 44% recognized a deficiency in essential measures such as archiving and security. Adding to the concerns, 45% experienced inadvertent data leaks with their AI initiatives. As organizations contemplate the introduction of AI, a significant majority—71%—express apprehension over data privacy and security, whereas 61% worry about the quality and classification of internal data.

Furthermore, organizations with mature IM strategies are reporting 50% greater benefits from AI adoption compared to those less developed. An understanding of the need for new IM strategies to leverage AI effectively was recognized by 77% of organizations.

Looking ahead, 60% of organizations have plans to allocate over one-quarter of their technology budgets to AI within the next five years. Despite these intentions, only 46% are currently providing in-house training tailored to AI technologies. AvePoint’s assessment points to an urgent need for systems that enable employees to use the latest technologies effectively and safely.
