The Potential of Quantum Computing for Sustainable Development

A recent white paper presented at the UN Climate Change Conference highlights the potential of quantum computers to contribute to global sustainable development. Quantum computers offer a more energy-efficient solution to solving certain problems and provide new insights into key sustainability challenges.

Traditional information technologies already consume a significant amount of energy, with data and computer centers being the major consumers. Supercomputers, such as Frontier, consume vast amounts of electricity, equivalent to that used by thousands of households. In contrast, quantum computers have the potential to solve tasks much faster while requiring considerably less energy.

The Jülich Supercomputing Centre is actively working on integrating quantum computers into its computing environment. By coupling quantum computers with supercomputers optimized for efficiency, hybrid systems are being developed. Some of these systems are already accessible to users. Prof. Kristel Michielsen, head of the JUNIQ quantum computer infrastructure, emphasizes the potential of quantum computers in promoting global sustainability.

In a hackathon held in 2023, participants in the “Blaise Pascal [re]generative quantum challenge” demonstrated the suitability of quantum computers for applications in sustainable agriculture, drug development, smart cities, smart grids, affordable/clean energy, sustainable transport, industry, circular economy, and environmental and biodiversity conservation.

With the integration of quantum computers into existing computing systems, the potential for sustainable development in various sectors becomes evident. The energy efficiency of quantum computers offers an opportunity to address sustainability challenges while accelerating problem-solving capabilities. This aligns with the goal of promoting greater sustainability in global developments.

The future of quantum computing holds immense promise in contributing to the advancement of sustainable development. As research and initiatives continue to explore the potential of quantum computers, it is essential to harness their capabilities to create a more sustainable future. By combining technological advancements with a focus on environmental and social responsibility, quantum computing can play a significant role in shaping a sustainable world.
