German startup Vay has announced the launch of its first commercial service in Las Vegas, offering remote-driven electric cars for rent. Unlike autonomous vehicles, Vay’s cars are controlled by remote human drivers from a teledrive station equipped with a steering wheel, pedals, and monitors. The vehicles are outfitted with a range of sensors to replicate the car’s surroundings, allowing the remote driver to navigate the streets of Las Vegas. Vay sees a “massive use case” for remote driving functions, envisioning a future where all cars are equipped with teledriving capabilities, enabling on-demand tele-valet services and safe transportation for individuals who have consumed alcohol.
The company has been testing its technology for over four years and made history in February 2023 by driving a vehicle without a person inside on a public road in Europe.
