An analysis conducted by Quartz found that a search for “girlfriend” on the GPT Store yielded at least eight AI chatbots, with titles like “Korean Girlfriend,” “Virtual Sweetheart,” and “Your girlfriend Scarlett.” These chatbots offer various prompts, such as asking about users’ dream partners and sharing secrets.
Interestingly, despite the policy restrictions, relationship chatbots have remained highly popular. Data indicates that a significant portion of downloaded AI chatbot apps in 2023 were related to AI friends, girlfriends, or companions. Some users have even reported forming emotional attachments or falling in love with their AI companions.
Since the introduction of the GPT Builder program in November, OpenAI has witnessed over 3 million GPTs created by users. The GPT Store, however, is only accessible by subscribers of OpenAI’s premium ChatGPT plans.
While OpenAI’s policy emphasizes enforcement at submission and allows for retroactive application upon further review, it seems that the rise of AI girlfriend bots on the GPT Store raises questions about the effectiveness of the enforcement measures.
