AI’s Impact on Society: Less Dramatic Change in Jobs, Says OpenAI CEO

OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, believes that concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) significantly reshaping and disrupting the world are exaggerations. At a conversation organized by Bloomberg during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Altman emphasized that AI will have a lesser impact on the world and jobs than anticipated.

Altman specifically referred to artificial general intelligence (AGI), which represents a level of AI capable of completing tasks at or even surpassing human capabilities. He mentioned that AGI could be developed in the near future, although he did not provide a specific timeline.

OpenAI gained prominence following the release of its ChatGPT chatbot in late 2022. However, Altman has cautioned against overstating the potential of AI, stating that people may end up disappointed. It is important to recognize that true AGI has not yet been realized.

OpenAI, founded in 2015, is dedicated to achieving AGI. The company, backed by Microsoft and valued at nearly $100 billion, prioritizes the development of safe and responsible AI technology.

Addressing concerns about AI exacerbating economic inequalities and displacing the working class, Altman acknowledged that these are valid issues to consider. However, he emphasized that AI is currently not replacing jobs on the scale that many economists fear. Altman also highlighted that AI is already proving to be a valuable tool for increasing productivity.

The question of AI safety and OpenAI’s role in ensuring it was at the center of Altman’s temporary removal from the company in November. However, he was reinstated as CEO shortly after due to strong opposition from OpenAI employees and investors. As part of his return, Microsoft gained a non-voting board observer position at OpenAI.

While the impact of AI on society is a topic of ongoing debate, Altman’s perspective offers a more tempered assessment of the technology’s potential. As AI continues to evolve, finding a balance between advancement and responsible implementation will be crucial to mitigate any potential negative consequences.
