Morgan State University Receives Grant to Implement Chatbot Technology in First-Year Courses

Morgan State University has been awarded a $1.8 million grant from the National Institute for Student Success (NISS) to deploy chatbot technology in first-year math and English courses. The grant is part of a larger $7.6 million grant to Georgia State University from the U.S. Department of Education to enhance student outcomes using AI-enhanced chatbots.

The pilot initiative aims to investigate whether course-integrated chatbot communication can improve students’ academic experiences, with a focus on their connection with course instructors and their sense of belonging. The chatbots will also track and analyze select inputs, such as study time, uptake of supplemental academic supports, and assignment completion.

Known as the Technology Enhanced Academic Communication to Help in Math and English (TEACH ME), the project will adapt text-based chatbots with AI capabilities to provide proactive outreach and support to undergraduate students. The chatbots will offer course-specific assistance and guidance throughout the first-year math and English courses.

Over the next four years, the grant will cover various costs, including faculty course buyouts, stipends, grad assistant support, and the hiring of additional staff members. This includes the recruitment of a project director, data analysts, and other necessary support. Additionally, funding will be allocated for a chatbot vendor to provide the required technology and its implementation.

The ultimate goal of this initiative is to improve course performance, retention, and graduation rates among first-year students. By integrating chatbot technology into the learning experience, Morgan State University aims to enhance students’ academic journeys and provide them with the necessary support to succeed. Through this pilot program, the university hopes to pave the way for innovative approaches to teaching and learning that can benefit students nationwide.
