AMD Unveils New Ryzen 8000G Desktop APUs at CES 2024

In a recent announcement at CES 2024, AMD has provided details about its highly anticipated Ryzen 8000G AM5 desktop APUs. The lineup consists of the Ryzen 8700G and Ryzen 8600G, both based on the Phoenix 1 dies, while the Ryzen 8600G and Ryzen 8300G are based on the Phoenix 2 dies.

While the new APUs offer exciting possibilities for budget-conscious consumers, there are some limitations to consider. The Phoenix 2-based Ryzen 8600G and 8300G have fewer memory channels and PCIe lanes, which may pose challenges for those looking to maximize performance.

To address this issue, GIGABYTE has unveiled the B650E AORUS ELITE X AX ICE motherboard, compatible with Ryzen 8000G Phoenix 1 dies. The motherboard features PCIe 4.0 x8 slots for discrete graphics cards and PCIe 4.0 x4 slots ready for M.2 NVMe SSDs, providing a solution for users who require higher bandwidth.

One notable advantage of the Phoenix 1 dies is their dual-channel DDR5 memory support, surpassing the single-channel DDR5 memory support of the Phoenix 2 dies. This means that the Ryzen 8700G and 8600G can handle up to 256GB of DDR5 memory, making them suitable for mid-range desktop APUs.

Unfortunately, the Phoenix 2 dies suffer from limited memory and PCIe lane support. The total number of lanes in these dies is just 14, with only 10 usable. In contrast, the Phoenix 1 dies offer 20 total lanes, with 14 of them being usable. This discrepancy can affect various aspects of performance, including RAM, SSDs, and overall system performance.

Although AMD has previously showcased the Ryzen 8700G paired with a Radeon RX 7900 XTX discrete graphics card on PCIe 4.0 x8 lanes and single-channel DDR5 memory, it is evident that the Phoenix 2 dies are lacking in several areas, ultimately leading to reduced performance.
