Taiwan Initiates Talent Recruitment Drive to Boost Semiconductor Industry

Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) is taking proactive measures to address the talent shortfall in the country’s semiconductor industry by seeking professionals from overseas. Recognizing the intensifying competition in the global tech landscape, Taiwan aims to tap into the talent pool of Southeast Asian nations like the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

Under the collaboration of the MOEA and the Industrial Development Administration (IDA), a series of talent-seeking missions has been organized throughout 2024. This strategic blueprint builds upon the success of a similar initiative conducted last year, which resulted in the recruitment of 316 individuals. The positive trend aligns with the industry’s demand for skilled individuals in IC design, assembly, and testing.

Each country on the recruitment mission’s agenda brings unique potential and strategic significance. The Philippines, for example, already serves as a prominent source of overseas talent for Taiwanese tech companies such as ASE Technology Holding Co. and Powertech Technology Inc. Malaysia, on the other hand, boasts a sizable Chinese ethnic community and a large number of Malaysian university students in Taiwan, making it an attractive target for recruitment.

Vietnam has caught the attention of the Taiwanese tech industry with its ambitious efforts to develop IC design talent. Taiwan recognizes Vietnam’s potential and has included the country in its talent recruitment mission, anticipating the attraction of high-caliber candidates.

Interestingly, Singapore has been excluded from the recruitment drive. Despite being a prominent player in the Southeast Asian tech landscape, Singaporean tech professionals prefer local opportunities that offer competitive salaries and benefits, making it challenging for Taiwanese firms to recruit from the country.

The MOEA’s initiative highlights Taiwan’s commitment to maintaining its position as a key player in the global tech industry. Given the significance of the semiconductor industry in various sectors like consumer electronics and automotive, the success of these talent recruitment missions has the potential to significantly strengthen Taiwan’s global standing in the tech arena.
