Consumers Increasingly Eager for Autonomous Vehicles, Survey Finds

A recent survey conducted by Ghost Autonomy has revealed a growing interest among consumers for driver-assisted vehicles. The survey, titled “Autonomous Vehicles: Consumer Trends and Attitudes Survey,” found that consumers are not only intrigued but actively seeking autonomous driving technology.

According to the findings, 77% of participants expressed a strong preference for fully autonomous driving over robotaxis, while 52% of those with firsthand experience with self-driving vehicles would be willing to expedite their next car purchase if full autonomy were available.

The survey collected insights from over 1,200 participants representing diverse age groups, income levels, and regions. Ghost Autonomy, a company headquartered in California with offices in Dallas, Detroit, and Sydney, Australia, found that Tesla owners had the highest exposure to self-driving features.

CEO John Hayes believes that autonomous driving is the next frontier for the automotive industry, as consumer demand continues to evolve. He emphasizes that the survey’s findings highlight the increasing inclination of consumers towards adopting autonomous vehicles as they gain real-world exposure to the technology. Additionally, consumers want to better understand the reliability and safety aspects before integrating this technology into their daily lives.

The survey also revealed that age plays a role in consumers’ readiness for self-driving vehicles. Over 70% of respondents between the ages of 21 and 39 expressed a desire for fully autonomous driving in the next five years. Safety remains a top concern, with blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assistance, and emergency-swerve assistance being the essential features consumers prioritize when purchasing a new car.

Furthermore, the survey indicated that 65% of respondents would want autonomous driving technology in their cars within the next ten years, provided the technology is proven to be safe. Over 50% of consumers also expressed their interest in autonomy being driven by the desire for easier commutes.

Notably, Tesla owners exhibited the highest demand for full autonomy, with 88% expressing their desire to have it in their next car. These findings confirm the growing interest consumers have in autonomous vehicles and highlight the need for continued research and development in this field.
