New Study Shows AI’s Impact on Colonoscopy Detection Rate

Researchers have conducted a new study to determine the influence of artificial intelligence (AI) tools on the adenoma detection rate (ADR) during colonoscopies, specifically analyzing the role of a doctor’s experience. The study compared two groups of doctors: those with less than 2000 colonoscopies under their belt and experienced doctors.

Using high-definition colonoscopy with or without an AI computer-aided detection (CADe) tool known as GI Genius, the researchers measured the ADR, which is vital for assessing colonoscopy quality. The study aimed to assess how AI technology affected ADR and whether a doctor’s experience played a significant role in the outcomes.

The results were intriguing. Among less experienced doctors, utilizing the AI tool during colonoscopies showed a significant increase in the overall ADR compared to those who did not use the technology. The AI assistance also enhanced the detection of adenomas and specific types of growths in the colon.

Surprisingly, the study revealed that a doctor’s experience had only a minor impact on the ADR. Although experience is an essential factor in performing colonoscopies, it did not significantly influence the differences in ADR between the two groups. This finding suggests that AI assistance benefits less experienced doctors in detecting abnormalities during colonoscopies, with the impact of experience on ADR being relatively minimal in comparison.

This research highlights the potential of AI technology in improving the detection rate of abnormal growths in the colon and its potential to assist doctors with varying levels of experience.
