Casper Labs and IBM Collaborate to Develop AI Governance Tool on Blockchain

Casper Labs, a leading blockchain solutions company, has announced a partnership with IBM to create an artificial intelligence (AI) governance tool. The tool utilizes decentralized ledger technology to introduce version control, monitoring, and access controls for AI models. This collaboration came about as Casper Labs recognized the growing convergence between AI and blockchain technology and the need for effective governance in both fields.

According to Mrinal Manohar, Chief Executive of Casper Labs, the integration of AI and blockchain technology has become vital due to increased government regulations and the demand for responsible AI behavior. In order to address these challenges, Casper Labs and IBM have developed a software-as-a-service product that combines IBM’s watsonx.governance with the Casper Blockchain platform. This product provides companies with an auditable solution for controlling and monitoring AI models.

Blockchain technology offers a tamper-proof historical record of changes made to an AI model by creating a data tracking layer using distributed ledgers and cryptography. Each modification is recorded as a transaction in the blockchain, allowing for easy identification and a “reset point” in case any issues arise with the model. This tamper-resistant and time-synchronized nature of blockchain technology makes AI governance highly automatable and certifiable.

IBM’s watsonx.governance toolkit adds another layer of automation and management for AI models to comply with regulatory requirements. It also addresses ethical and legal concerns related to generative AI and machine learning models. By combining these capabilities with the transparent historical record provided by blockchain technology, organizations can minimize risks and identify the cause of any issues that may arise.

Additionally, the integration of blockchain technology allows for the implementation of access controls and permissions on who can edit or train AI models. This is particularly important for large organizations that handle sensitive datasets, as it enables them to control access and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

Casper Labs and IBM anticipate that their AI governance tool will initially attract customers from highly regulated industries, such as financial services and insurance. These industries have strict regulations and liability concerns related to AI behavior. The tool will also be useful for supply chain companies and industries that rely on AI for “track and trace” purposes, as it provides a comprehensive audit trail.

Currently in active beta mode, the AI governance tool is set to launch in the third quarter of this year. Casper Labs welcomes feedback from enterprise users to further enhance the solution’s usefulness. By leveraging the power of blockchain technology, the collaboration between Casper Labs and IBM aims to drive transparency, risk mitigation, and effective governance for AI deployments.
