ARM Unveils Next-Generation Cortex-X CPU Core for Future Smartphones

ARM, a prominent semiconductor and software company, is set to release its latest Cortex-X CPU core for smartphones in 2025. This groundbreaking development aims to bridge the performance gap between ARM-designed processors and custom ARM implementations, bringing ARM-powered devices closer to Apple’s advanced A18 Pro and Bionic SoCs.

The upcoming MediaTek Dimensity 9400 and Samsung Exynos 2500 chipsets will be among the first to integrate ARM’s new CPU core, known as “Blackhawk.” According to ARM CEO Rene Haas, the company’s goal is to enhance the performance of these chips, enabling them to compete with Apple’s customized implementations.

ARM’s Blackhawk core is projected to deliver the most significant year-over-year IPC (instructions per cycle/clock) performance increase in the past five years, as indicated by evaluations using Geekbench 6. Additionally, the Blackhawk core exhibits impressive Large Language Model (LLM) performance, amplifying its generative AI capabilities.

ARM emphasizes that its Cortex CPU is a preferred choice for developers compared to alternative options like the NPU or GPU for running AI tasks. As the industry increasingly shifts towards utilizing smaller language models, ARM’s platform, with its high-performing CPU and GPU, combined with its well-integrated Machine Learning (ML) libraries and frameworks, ensures a more efficient user experience on devices.

While the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 application processor is not expected to incorporate ARM’s new CPU core, Qualcomm will introduce their proprietary Oryon CPU cores instead. However, ARM’s innovation sets a new standard for CPU performance in the smartphone market, propelling the evolution of mobile computing capabilities.

Consumers can anticipate the arrival of smartphones featuring ARM’s Cortex-X5 CPU core towards the end of this year, with the potential for retail availability during key industry events like CES or MWC in 2025.
