Arm Developing Powerful New CPU Core to Compete with Apple

Arm has confirmed that it is working on a new CPU core, codenamed “Blackhawk,” which is expected to deliver a significant jump in performance. This move is aimed at closing the gap between Arm’s chips and those produced by Apple. The next iteration of Arm’s Cortex-X line of CPU cores is set to be the most powerful available at launch and could be found in devices by the end of 2024 or early 2025.

According to a research note by Patrick Moorhead, CEO at Moor Insights & Strategy, the “Blackhawk” core is part of Arm’s strategy to eliminate the performance gap between Arm-designed processors and custom Arm implementations. Arm claims that the new core will demonstrate substantial performance gains, with the “largest year-over-year IPC performance increase in five years.”

The official launch of the new core, likely to be named Cortex-X5, is expected in May this year. Arm’s previous generation Cortex-X4 was also touted as the fastest Arm CPU ever built at launch. Arm sees Apple as its main competitor in the smartphone market, despite Apple being an Arm licensee. Apple’s custom-designed chips have given iPhones a performance advantage over Android devices that rely on Arm’s pre-validated core designs.

This anticipated competition between Arm, Qualcomm, and Apple could lead to increased efforts to deliver better performance in smartphone CPU designs. It is speculated that Samsung may give up on developing its own cores and opt for Arm’s designs instead.

Arm is set to report its first full quarter results since going public on the Nasdaq stock exchange in September 2023. The company’s stock had hit a post-IPO high but has since fallen. Arm’s revenue for Q3 fiscal year 2024 is projected to be slightly below analysts’ expectations.
